I'm getting an error "PREAUTH DECLINE" or "ACCOUNT NOT APPROVED". What does this mean?
A pre-authorization declination notice can happen for a number of reasons. This is passed down from the banking network processing your rental payment. The reasons for receiving this notice could be, but are not limited to, one of the following reasons...
- A new bank account that's been created with little to no transaction history
- The bank account is red flagged for being known to write bad checks (bounced checks)
- The account holder is considered high risk for credit reasons, either bad or lack there of.
What can be done to fix this issue or prevent this from happening in the future? You'll want to start by speaking with your bank about the issue to see if you can get this corrected. Be careful when writing a check to make sure that the funds are available to cover it in the future. Writing a bad check can put you on "high risk" alerts for banking networks and disrupt your ability to submit electronic payments.
While these possible causes and recommendations are nothing but possibilities, the banking network can issue "PREAUTH DECLINE" statuses for a number of other reasons. It's best to speak with your bank and work to get this issue resolved. Unfortunately, there is nothing RentPost can do on our end to remove or fix this problem as we aren't the ones providing this declination.
